This picture shows the amazing salt ponds near Maras, Peru. Every pond is maintained by a local family. The ponds date back to the Incas and are fed through an intricate network of small channels that deliver the salty water to the ponds. After they are super saturated with salt, the channel is temporarily cut off and the pond allowed to dry. The salt crystallizes and is harvested by the family.
