The Only Tourist in Resistencia

I’m pretty sure I am the only person currently in Resistencia who is a tourist and who speaks English. This isn’t too much of a problem considering I was planning on resting for a couple of days in a nice hotel. This hotel is quite nice actually, with one wall that is all window overlooking the Plaza de Armas from the 7th floor. I think the taxi driver from the omnibus station told me that it was the largest Plaza de Armas in South America. It is certainly the largest one I’ve seen, so maybe it is true.

10 Hour Bus Ride along the Parana River

Random thoughts during the 10 hour bus ride between Iguazu and Resistencia.

Coming into posadas was quite nice with the Parana River to the right and a nice view of the city. There is a really long bridge across the river which leads to a smaller looking city. At Posados, we switched to another bus at the garage and this one had a red interior and was much cooler.

Iguazu Falls

Bigger than Kakabeka Falls, and smaller than the Marianas Trench, Iguazu Falls is quite the site to see. This picture is only one of many falls found at Iguazu and certainly not the biggest one, but the only one with a rainbow (that I saw).

AEP

AEP is the other airport in Buenos Aires aka the Aeroparque Jorge Newberry. My flight to Iguazu left from there this morning and I arrived to an even hotter location. The newest hotel is actually a hostel but I have a private room. The hostel itself is more like a resort with a nice pool, large open area with a bar and restaurant etc. and some outside areas I have yet to explore. The only down side is the air conditioner that sounds like a jet engine.

¿Dónde está el mercado?

On Sundays in Buenos Aires, there is a really big street market from the Plaza de Mayo down Defensa and spilling into some side streets. Of course, I had to go check it out. It was certainly big, and there were some interesting things there, but since I will be back in Buenos Aires at a future date, I decided to look only.

Cambio, cambio, cambio?

My first hotel in Buenos Aires is on a pedestrian walkway full of restaurants and shops. It is also full of people offering, “cambio”. As you walk down the street, that is all you hear. From the tour guide, I found out that they are offering to exchange your U.S. dollars for Argentinian Pesos at a better rate than you can get from the bank.

Hola Argentina

First of all, here is a seasoned traveller tip:

Before you travel, download the City Maps2Go app from the Play store, pay the whopping $1.99 for the unlimited edition and download all the maps you will need for your trip. When you travel, just remove the sim card from your phone and use the offline maps on City Maps2Go and the gps capability of your phone to find your way around the city.

A prince on the bridge of a castle moat heard

Today I climbed two hills, more or less. The first was Santa Lucia which was the location of an old Spanish castle and is now a very pretty park in downtown Santiago. It offers some very nice views of the city and a nice view of an even taller challenge: San Cristobal Hill.

Santiago

Santiago has a lot more to offer than can fit in two days. These guys were in the Museum of Pre-Colombian Art which was fascinating. After a tours4tips tour in the morning, many of the participants decided to have a late lunch together and I managed to order a great seafood chowder at a local eatery. The people in the tour were from all over including Europe and North America.

Travel Tips and the Best Pizza in the World

… And the quietest air conditioner in the world

I reluctantly left Valparaiso today, although, I’m sure if I stayed too long it would have gotten old… wait… it already is old, but not in the way that I meant. Today’s photograph is of a park in Valparaiso that is all tiled in hearts.

Walking from Valparaiso to Viño del Mar

Diana (from Argentina) and I decided to walk from Valparaíso to Viña del Mar today. Most people take the bus, but the idea of walking for a couple hours along the Pacific coast was very appealing and probably not a common activity for tourists.

Valparaiso

After a long journey and having a good night’s rest, it was time to jump right into Valparaiso. There were many people (I heard 700) boarding the Queen Victoria today for a 23 day cruise to Australia. The couple with whom I shared breakfast in the hotel, the fellow in the seat in front of me on the plane from Toronto and one gentleman who was on a private tour of Valparaiso were all boarding the rather large ship later in the afternoon.

Machu Picchu

A little rain during the first visit to Machu Picchu made the scenery even more breathtaking.
